Mcdonnell -- Nostolgic Adventure at it best. : First read this novella length story some 40 years ago as a child and picked up the audio book and kindle combo package last year. I already knew the story so it waited low in my que of things to read until yesterday. It only takes about five hours to listen through the audiobook, or even less to read soI finished it in one day. It is a fine adventure story of the sort that appeal especially to boys and young men, with great feats of daring do interspersed with set backs complicating the like of our protagonist. David, our self declared Emperor of Pellucider Is the same main character from the first book (At The Earth's Core) and you should definitely read the books in story order unless you are familiar with the setting and characters. The series involves the exploration of a land mass formed when the earth cooled. This formed a shell as Earth's center core continued to shrink and separated from the shell. We live on the outside. Burroughs wrote and sold so many novels/series in the early 1900's - he knew what his audience wanted. Fascinating new settings and lots of adventure. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Hinzman Trophy -- One of the classics of pulp fantasy : This is a classic of pulp fantasy and that is what you get when you buy it. It is not the finest writing and the story is pretty much the same as what you will find in nearly any of the ERB stories like this (Barsoom, Tarzan, etc.) So if you like that kind of story, you will like this book. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from NavyMan -- ERB Classic : Sitting down with one of these "old " ERB books is like spending an afternoon with an old friend. This is one of the books that I read as a pre-teen, I am now in my seventies. I enjoyed them then, and they are still just as enjoyable, if you keep in mind the time and world in which they were written. There is a quality in the writing that might escape some readers. ERB, through his characters, displays a self deprecating sense of self assurrance. His characters often say things like," I was not" the best of this or that, but I put every ounce of skill or training or whatever it took to meet the situation at hand to accomplish a task. His characters establish friendships and are loyal to friends and family to the point of self denial and loss of self satisfaction, qualities which might not be understood these days. A master story teller, albeit a little dated by today's standards, for someone like me who has enjoyed reading and rereading his novels for well over 50 years, it is like meeting up once more with an old and valued friend.
